James 3:1-2 “Don’t be in any rush to become a teacher, my friends. Teaching is highly responsible work. Teachers are held to the strictest standards. And none of us is perfectly qualified. We get it wrong nearly every time we open our mouths. If you could find someone whose speech was perfectly true, you’d have a perfect person, in perfect control of life.”
If I’m being completely honest, these couple of verses were large contributors to the reason I wrestled so strongly with being called to preach. That and the fact that everyone in my life growing up who I highly revered, were ministers of the Gospel. I did not want to get it wrong or heaven forbid mess it up. There is a fine line between Holy Reverence and fear. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like the days of thirsty people clamoring for pulpits and microphones has come to an end. Not because people don’t still crave that position without weighing out the responsibility, no sis…that will never die. It started with Lucifer and it won’t ever end. It’s just that now, everyone has a microphone and a platform, its called a cell-phone. I truly believe that everyone who knows Jesus, has a story of the redeeming and transforming power of the love of the Savior to tell. To testify of the marvelous works of the Lord is different than teaching. Let us tell our love stories loud, but proceed with caution when we say things like “God said”, or we add His Holy name to our ideas. If it isn’t BIBLE, then it isn’t pertinent. I’m going to take this a step further and say, be careful who you lend your spirit ears to. A platform doesn’t give you license to listen.

Consecration: Noise
Today, attempt to consecrate sound for an hour. Turn off your music, tv, and phone. Power down anything that beeps or buzzes or blinks. Then attend to your responses. Are you restless or restful without the filler? Is your mind more or less distracted? Is the aloneness comforting or unsettling? Ask God to reveal to you the power this world’s sounds have in your life. Then ask Him to reveal to you the power His sounds have in your soul.
